What is 1984 Hosting?

1984 Hosting is an independent web hosting company based in Reykjavík, Iceland. The company has been operating since 2006 and focuses on privacy, free expression, security, and environmentally friendly hosting. Its infrastructure runs in Icelandic data centers powered by renewable energy from geothermal and hydroelectric sources.

For WordPress users, the main starting point is 1984’s shared web hosting service. It is an out-of-the-box hosting environment with a control panel, email service, SSL, and support for popular content management systems such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal. The company also advertises a 1-click WordPress installation, which can make the initial setup easier for less technical users.

The shared plan is generous on paper. Domains, subdomains, alias domains, bandwidth, disk space, SQL databases, email accounts, and email storage are listed as unlimited. However, 1984 explains in its terms that unlimited shared hosting still operates within the normal resource limits of a shared server. Customers who need consistent access to larger amounts of CPU, RAM, or bandwidth may be directed toward a more suitable service.

WordPress users who want more protection can add the WordPress Security Pack. It includes a managed firewall, malware scanning, brute force protection, managed WordPress updates, performance optimization, off-site backups, and emergency restore support. The pack is particularly useful for business owners who would rather have routine WordPress maintenance handled for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Its shared hosting supports WordPress and includes a 1-click WordPress installation option.

Yes. Let’s Encrypt SSL is included and automatically provided with web hosting.

Yes, but the backup setup depends on the service. The WordPress Security Pack includes off-site backups, while 1984’s terms state that shared hosting backups are provided on a best-effort basis and should not replace the customer’s own off-site backups.

The shared hosting plan lists unlimited bandwidth. However, 1984 explains that shared hosting still operates within reasonable shared-server resource limits, so “unlimited” does not mean unlimited CPU or RAM usage.

1984 Hosting operates its hosting infrastructure in Icelandic data centers. HostAdvice also lists Reykjavík as its server location.
